  3. This mjreadme.txt file forms part of this zip file.

  5. This file contains release notes, installation information and
  6. information about error messages for Mah Jongg for Windows, 
  7. Version 1.01.

  9. Mah Jongg for Windows Version 1.01 is now available on 
  10. CompuServe's SWREG (GO SWREG). The ID is 5675.

  15. The following 11 files are contained in this zip file:

  17.     mahjongg.exe    The program main executable file
  18.     mahjongg.hlp    Windows help file for Mah Jongg
  19.     tiles.dll       Library containing tile images
  20.     bwcc.dll        Borland custom controls (dialog boxes)
  21.     demorun.exe     Utility to run Mah Jongg endlessly
  22.     stake.wav       Sound of tile landing on a stake
  23.     table.wav       Sound of tile landing on a table
  24.     alltiles.bmp    External tile set
  25.     numbers.bmp     Basis for more external tile sets
  26.     voices.zip      Zip file containing voices (25 wave files)

  29. If you have the Borland bwcc.dll file already installed in your 
  30. Windows\System directory and it is not older than the one included 
  31. in this zip file, then you don't need the Borland bwcc.dll file from 
  32. this zip file.
  33.  
  34. Note:   This note concerns all files EXCEPT BWCC.DLL.
  35.     None of the files of the previous release of "Mah Jongg for 
  36.     Windows 1.00" will work properly with this version. The best 
  37.     option is to replace all old files with these new ones.
  38.  
  39. Note:   Mah Jongg will run properly without all the sound files (*.wav) 
  40.     or the bitmap files (*.bmp).
  41.  
  42. Note:   See "mahjongg.hlp" topic "Licensing and Ordering Information - 
  43.     What's New" to read about all the additions and improvements 
  44.     in this version of the game.

  46. Note:   Mah Jongg no longer uses the file called "mahjongg.ini" which 
  47.     is in your Windows directory. You can delete it if you no longer 
  48.     wish to play with the previous version.

  51. ******** Installation and Removal ********
  52.  
  53. System Requirements:
  54.  
  55.     Microsoft Windows (TM) version 3.10 or higher.
  56.  
  57. Installing Mah Jongg for Windows:
  58.  
  59.     To install the files which are contained in the file "voices.zip",
  60.     see the next section called "Installing the voice files".
  61.  
  62.     Create a new directory in your favorite games directory called 
  63.     mahjongg or whatever name you fancy. 
  64.  
  65.     Extract or copy all the files from this zip file to the directory
  66.     you have just created. You can move the Borland file to your 
  67.     Windows\System directory if you like, so other programs can access 
  68.     this file too. 
  69.  
  70.     In Windows, open File Manager and Program Manager side by side. You 
  71.     now need to drag the file mahjongg.exe from File Manager to a program 
  72.     group in Program Manager. For example, if you already have a "games" 
  73.     program group in Program Manager you might like to add the 
  74.     mahjongg.exe file to this group.  
  75.  
  76.     Now double click on the newly created icon for mahjongg in the 
  77.     program group and off you go - you are ready to play!
  78.  
  79.     You can also drag the file "demorun.exe" to Program Manager. 
  80.     Starting this program will start "mahjongg.exe" in demo mode. 
  81.     Mah Jongg will now play endlessly. This demo mode is especially 
  82.     meant for shops, exhibitions and situations where you might 
  83.     like to have something attractive displayed on the screen.

  85. Installing the voice files:
  86.  
  87.     The zip file called "voices.zip" contains one set of voice files, 
  88.     which can be used for all players.
  89.  
  90.     To install the voice files, create a directory called "voices", 
  91.     which MUST be a subdirectory of the directory where you installed 
  92.     "mahjongg.exe". So if you installed "mahjongg.exe" in the 
  93.     following directory:
  94.         
  95.         c:\mahjongg\
  96.  
  97.     then the voices will go in this directory:
  98.  
  99.         c:\mahjongg\voices\
  100.  
  101.     This is meant to keep your hard disk tidy.
  102.  
  103.     Extract all the files contained in "voices.zip" to this newly 
  104.     created directory "voices". Now you're ready to start 
  105.     "mahjongg.exe". Choose the menu option "Game | Preferences | Sound" 
  106.     and check the "Player's Voices" and the "Your Voice" check boxes. 
  107.     As soon as you start a game the players will call out the tiles 
  108.     they discard.
  109.  
  110.     Note:   The two sound files called "table.wav" and "stake.wav" 
  111.         should stay in the same directory where you've installed 
  112.         "mahjongg.exe".
  113.  
  114.     See the "mahjongg.hlp" file for extensive information on creating 
  115.     new voice files.
  116.  
  117. Removing Mah Jongg for Windows:
  118.  
  119.     Just delete the files: mahjongg.exe, mahjongg.hlp, tiles.dll, 
  120.     mjreadme.txt, demorun.exe, mahjongg.cfg, all the wave files and 
  121.     possibly any bitmap files used as tile sets. In the case of the 
  122.     Borland bwcc.dll file only delete if it is NOT in your 
  123.     Windows\System directory.
  124.  
  125.     Mah Jongg for Windows no longer uses its own initialization file 
  126.     called mahjongg.ini in your Windows directory. You can safely
  127.     delete this file.
  128.  
  129.  
  130. ******** Error Messages ********
  131.  
  132. If you are unlucky Mah Jongg for Windows might show one of the following
  133. error messages:
  134.  
  135. 1       Old version of "TILES.DLL"
  136.     Solution:       Make sure that the right version of tiles.dll is in 
  137.             the same directory as mahjongg.exe. You can check 
  138.             the version numbers in File Manager if you select 
  139.             the menu "View | All File Details". The version 
  140.             numbers of mahjongg.exe and tiles.dll are shown in 
  141.             the time stamp of those files: 01:01:00. The version 
  142.             of tiles.dll that came with release 1.00 (January 
  143.             1995) will not work properly with this new version.
  144.             If the problem remains, try the strategy followed 
  145.             in point 3 below, but look for TILES.DLL in stead of
  146.             BWCC.DLL. After you've done all that, move the one 
  147.             and only copy of TILES.DLL left on your computer 
  148.             to the directory where you've installed mahjongg.exe.
  149.  
  150. 2       Can't find "TILES.DLL"
  151.     Solution:       Move TILES.DLL, MAHJONGG.HLP, MJREADME.TXT and 
  152.             MAHJONGG.EXE all to the same directory.
  153.  
  154. 3       You are using an old version of "BWCC.DLL".
  155.     Copy the version from the Mah Jongg zip file to your 
  156.     Windows\System directory. Mah Jongg will now exit.
  157.     Solution:       Make sure that the correct version of BWCC.DLL is
  158.             loaded in memory. If the copy of BWCC.DLL that came
  159.             with the Mah Jongg zip file is newer than the copy
  160.             found in your Windows or Windows\System directory,
  161.             then copy the version from the Mah Jongg zip file
  162.             to your Windows\System directory and delete any 
  163.             copies found in your Windows directory. Try running 
  164.             Mah Jongg again. If the problem remains then you 
  165.             have to search all directories listed after the 
  166.             "PATH=" and possibly "SET PATH=" statements in 
  167.             your autoexec.bat file and your Windows and 
  168.             Windows\System directory for copies of BWCC.DLL. 
  169.             Close all applications except Program Manager
  170.             and File Manager. Make backup copies of all 
  171.             versions on a floppy disk and include information 
  172.             from which directory a particular copy came from. 
  173.             Delete any versions of this DLL in your Windows 
  174.             directory and copy the newest version you can find 
  175.             of this DLL to your Windows\System directory.
  176.             Try running Mah Jongg again. If the problem still 
  177.             remains, then delete all copies of this DLL on 
  178.             your system, except for the copy in your 
  179.             Windows\System directory. Mah Jongg should run now.
  180.  
  181. 4       Sorry... You are using a version prior to Windows 3.1. Mah Jongg 
  182.     needs Windows 3.1 or higher. Mah Jongg will now exit.
  183.     Solution:       I'm afraid you'll have to install a version of 
  184.             Microsoft Windows (TM) newer than the version 
  185.             you have now. Versions onwards from 3.10 should 
  186.             run Mah Jongg properly.
  187.  
  188. 5       Mah Jongg has a problem allocating memory. Free up memory by closing
  189.     other applications. Mah Jongg will now exit.
  190.     Solution:       The memory on a computer is limited. Other 
  191.             applications have taken up so much of it that 
  192.             Mah Jongg can't get enough to run properly. 
  193.             Close all applications you're not working
  194.             on at the moment and try running Mah Jongg again.
  195.  
  196. 6       Could not Create Timer
  197.     Solution:       There are only a limited number of timers in Windows.
  198.             Other applications have taken up so many of them 
  199.             that Mah Jongg can't get the timers needed to run 
  200.             properly. Close all applications you're not working 
  201.             on at the moment and try running Mah Jongg again.
  202.  
  203. 7       Error opening Help. Can't find "mahjongg.hlp". Make sure it is in 
  204.     the same directory as mahjongg.exe.
  205.     Solution:       Move TILES.DLL, MAHJONGG.HLP, MJREADME.TXT and 
  206.             MAHJONGG.EXE all to the same directory.
  207.  
  208. All other problems are dealt with in the "mahjongg.hlp" file topic "Technical 
  209. Information - Error Messages" or in the appropriate description of the dialog 
  210. boxes "The Program Full Explanation - Information and Message Boxes".
